Five (S)imple Steps in five minutes

From our experience, there are going to be times when you will need more than just F.O.R.M. in order to invite someone.  You may need to spend some time talking about the Church and its programs.  We have developed a simple presentation outline that will help you share a gospel principle and invite the person to a Church activity or missionary discussion.  It is based on Five S(imple) Steps:  Start, Select, Share, Suggest, and Secure

The Five S(imple) Steps:

  1. Start a conversation with someone and establish a trusting relationship (see the F.O.R.M. tool).
  2. Select a principle of the Gospel to share with the person.  Pay attention to how you feel inside as you are speaking, because the Spirit will help you decide the appropriate subject to share.

    Select a principle that:

    A) Is one you believe in strongly

    B) Would be appreciated by the person you are speaking with because he or she believes something similar

    C) Feels like the right thing to be sharing with this person

Examples of Gospel Principles You Might Share:

    • Eternal Families

    • Tithing

    • Word of Wisdom

    • Honesty

    • Faith in God

    • Repentance

    • Baptism

    • Prayer

    • Fasting

  3. Share the Gospel principle you have selected. You might consider sharing the following with the person:

    • What the principle is about
    • Why it is important to you
    • How it helps make life go better
    • How it shows God's love for us
    • How it might help the person you are sharing with
    • Your testimony of the principle
  4. Suggest an activity that the person may enjoy participating in.

Types of Activities You Could Choose:

    • Church social activity

    • Family Home Evening

    • The Missionary Discussions

    • Watch a church video

    • Attend Church on Sunday

    • A Special Fireside

    • Family Friendshipping Activity

    • A Temple Visitor's Center

    • A Relief Society or Priesthood Activity

    Tip for Step 4:

Make the transition from step three (Sharing) to step four (Suggesting) by saying something like:

"...and that is why I like going to church on Sunday--I feel so uplifted by the speakers. I think you'd really enjoy coming out to church."

  5. Secure the invitation by asking the person directly and clearly if they will participate. Arrange the details of how to make the activity happen and arrange to follow-up ahead of time to confirm the plans.

For example: "Will you come with me to church on Sunday at 10:00 AM?" I'll call you Saturday night to confirm."

If you encounter a concern during any portion of the presentation sharing, ask for more information about the concern. Listen carefully and see if there is anything you can clarify or help with. If it is a question to answer, see the Star Test for help. If you do not feel comfortable handling the question, it is a great chance to say, "I'd like to arrange for you to talk with the Missionaries about this issue. It is really important and I appreciate your interest -- and I think they will be able to help you find the answers you are looking for."
